twentieth century boy
I had a long phone conversation with Ernie the Tradesman on Sunday. We talked in fine detail about the bathroom renovations.
I know that you will be as interested in my new bathroom as I would be in yours, however I am going to link to all the bits I've either bought, ordered, or intend to buy/order.
- Yesterday I bought a basin online. I love the basin, and this is exactly what I would get were I not selling the flat.
- Yesterday I also bought a WC online. The toilet is nothing special. The bathroom wall is made of stone, so I can't get one of those cool pedestal only ones, which is what I'd go for were I staying (and there wasn't the stone wall, obviously).
- Today I bought a bath. I am not fussed on the feet. But I have no intention on spending another £70 to upgrade. I'd go for nice Zen type feet, if I were staying.
- I also bought basin taps + bath mixer taps, online. Again, these aren't what I would get were I staying. They are about £100 cheaper. But they are modern and look OK.
- The flooring I'll probably have to go to a showroom to see - but I have my heart set on real wood, oak. I wonder though where the timber comes from? Can you have sustainable oak forests?
- The tiles will be a nightmare, because likewise I will have to visit a showroom. I have neutral mosaic tiles in mind.

I like the basin very much.
On the flooring, you could specify you want salvaged wood. As I understand it old railway sidings can be used and, with a bit of sanding and varnishing (only light), would give you the effect you are after. IF you can find them and IF they are of good enough quality.
Saves on the trees.
If you like the basin - I just saw one on ebay with the tap for £130 here.
Thanks for comments re flooring. I have floorboards beneath my current bathroom floor, which could be sanded and varnished. However the mess and time and expense (and the risk that I find out they are all crap and need to be covered anyway) means I am abandoning that route. So unless the oak flooring (which is really just posh laminate) is ethical I might go for a farmed timber instead.
I like your choices very much. I have been thinking about redoing my bath too, but it is just a dream, as I can't afford it...but I can live vicariously reading about others' renovations.
Thank you. I have been told off by Ernie The Tradesman today for buying the mixer tap for the bath. Apparently they don't fare well with the heating system I have (combination boiler). So, it looks like I'll get something I like better... separate hot and cold taps. I haven't quite decided which yet.
